Joan Kearney, RN Obituary

Joan Mary Kearney, RN, 92, of Archbald, died on Sunday, September 25, at her home surrounded by her caring family. She was the wife of the late Thomas Patrick Kearney, who died May 16, 1991, and the daughter of the late Rollin and Marguerite Quinn Holmes.

Joan graduated in 1947 from St. Patrick’s High School, Olyphant, and in 1950 from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Scranton, where she received her RN Degree. She was very proud of her nursing profession, having worked at Mercy Hospital for 43 years from 1950 to 1993. She treated each patient with the highest respect and sincere attention. Joan was also a faithful lifelong member of Christ the King Parish, St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Archbald, and its Altar and Rosary Society. In her retirement, she enjoyed reading, playing cards, puzzles, crafting, sewing, and gardening. Her personal TV choice was enjoying a good Hallmark movie. But most importantly, Joan liked spending valuable time with her children and grandchildren, which provided her with the utmost pleasure. The loving bond they developed will always remain true.

Joan is survived by her son, Thomas, and wife, Mary, Olyphant; three daughters, Joan Williams and husband, William; Mary Edmunds; and Ann Walker and husband, Charles, all of Archbald; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, all who held a special and warm place within her heart.

Preceding Joan in death were her two sons, Kevin (1995) and Patrick Kearney (2000); and her two brothers, Robert (2014) and Rollie Holmes (1936).

Joan’s needs over the past 3 years were met by her family team, daughters, Joan, Mary, and Ann; son-in-law, Charles; and grandsons, Patrick and James Walker.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt appreciation to those who provided weekly overseeing care to their mom, especially her nurses, Erin McGrath and Linda Lombardo, and to Betty Ann Koza, Social Worker, and Carol Birdie, Spiritual Advisor, for their kind and compassionate care.

The family will receive condolences on Monday, October 3, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 411 Church St. Archbald prior to Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Interment immediately following the service at St. Thomas Aquinas Church Cemetery, Archbald.
