Obituary

It is with deep sadness to announce the passing of Dolores Phyllis Niedzwiecki, RN, 93, who peacefully departed in the late evening of Saturday, September 2, 2023 at her home in Eynon. Phyllis leaves behind a remarkable legacy of love, strength and cherished moments that will forever echo in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Born in Eynon, she was the beloved daughter to Alfonso and Sally Rudalewicz Niedzwiecki.  Raised in Eynon, a community she held close to her heart, Phyllis was a 1948 graduate of Archbald High School and then secured a degree as a Registered Nurse from the Scranton State General Hospital School of Nursing.  She then found purpose and fulfillment, following a vocation as a dedicated RN, offering compassionate care to anyone who needed medical care. Her nurturing spirit and unwavering dedication shone brightly, leaving a lasting impression on the lives of those she served. Her nursing accomplishments are many, however, she remained humble and sincere for over 30 years, as she continued to deliver the best health care possible.   Scranton State General Hospital was the foundation and source for her prized career success story.  She worked as a floor nurse, Head Nurse, Faculty Member and from 1973 to 1984, the Director of Nursing Services.  Her staff and students will admit to the indelible mark Phyllis left on them, in the manner, method and respect in their patient care delivery.  May her spirited reverence to the nursing profession continue to inspire us all.

Phyllis earned her B.S. in Nursing Education from College Misericordia in 1966, followed by a Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration from University of Maryland with an emphasis on oncology and cardiology and then a Masters in Med Surgery where Phyllis enrolled in the Pre-Doctoral Program. She was the first nurse in Northeastern PA to be certified in Nursing Administration by the American Nurses Association.  She continued to work at Marion Convent up until her retirement.  She served as the Past President of Scranton State General Hospital Alumni Association and regularly attended meetings and social events.

Phyllis was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Czestochowa Church, Eynon at Christ the King Parish, Archbald.  She was an active participant of the Church’s Chior, volunteered at the Church’s bake-goods picnic stand and Past President of the Altar and Rosary Society and Sacred Heart Society.  In the community, before her illness, she was a Charter Member of the Eynon-Archbald Lions Club.

Surviving is her beloved and dedicated sister, Sally Ann Spudis, Eynon; sister-in-law, Margaret Niedzwiecki, Wisconsin; and her nieces and nephews and cousins, who will hold Phyllis’s memories close in their minds and forever in their hearts.

Preceding in death is her brother, Joseph Niedzwiecki, and her 3 sisters, Josephine Toczylowski, Constance Fitch, and Joan Patrizo.

Phyllis’s family would like to thank Dr. Linda Thomas and the staff at the Wright Center, Jermyn; her neighbor, Michelle Ballieu and to Carol Cirba and her home care staff for their dedicated, compassionate, and excellent care.  They treated Phyllis as their own family member.  They will forever be grateful.
