Gino Nervegna, 71, of Archbald, died Saturday morning at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA, as a result of complications from recurrent laryngeal cancer and ensuing chest surgery.

Son of Frances Giusti Nervegna, Scranton, he was born March 31, 1938 in Ossining NY, where his father Louis commuted daily to New York City as an electrical engineer employed with Con Edison. With the outbreak of WWII, his father was recruited as an engineer by the Army Signal Corps, and the family relocated to Philadelphia. His family moved to Scranton after the war to continue the operation of the family store, Giusti’s Market on Pittston Avenue in Southside, for another 30 years. Many of his fondest memories and most entertaining stories revolved around the unique and colorful people he knew as customers, neighbors, and extended family, as he grew up in the store.

While attending the University of Scranton as an Electronics major, he was a DJ at the university radio station, secretary of the physics club, and a member of the literary magazine. He was inducted into the physics national honor society Sigma Pi Sigma. His engineering degree in 1962 prepared him for employment at Bendix Microwave Devices in Bristol Connecticut, where he worked on the design of various high frequency electronics projects, including directional couplers and RF filters, some of which were used in high energy physics particle accelerators.

After several years in Connecticut, he moved back to Scranton to accept a physics teaching position at Scott Township High School, which later became part of the Lakeland School District. In 1968, he received a master’s degree in secondary education from the University of Scranton, and went on to teach physics and mathematics at Lakeland for over 30 years, serving in later years as chairman of the science department. He married his wife, the former Mary Berzite, of Archbald, in June 1970. The couple met while she was a Chemistry teacher at Lakeland.

While at Scott Township, he was a coach of the girl’s basketball team. In his early years as Lakeland, he coached the chess team in the former Lackawanna County Chess League. A ranked tournament player as a young man, he continued to play and study chess all his life, teaching students the game through the years as moderator of the chess club at Lakeland. He ran the National Honor Society and served as a president of the Lakeland branch of the Pennsylvania State Education Association. He retired from teaching in 1998.

He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Archbald. An avid sports fan, he especially loved baseball history. While his children were growing up, he was an Archbald Little League coach. A boyhood fan of the early Scranton Red Sox farm team, he began following for the Boston Red Sox and reading Red Sox history after his children moved to Boston to attend college at MIT.

He will be always remembered as a good friend, a caring teacher, a loving husband, a doting father, and a dutiful son.

Also surviving are his son Louis, Andover, Mass.; his brother in law and wife Michael and Barbara Berzite, Scott Twp., and niece Christina Berzite, Pittsburgh. He was preceded in death by his father Louis, Scranton, and his daughter Margaret, Cambridge, Mass.

"Miss Me But Let Me Go"

When I've Come to the End of the Road
And the Sun has Set for me
I want no rites in a Gloom filled Room
Why cry for a Soul set Free?

Miss Me little, but not for Me long
And not with your Heads bowed low
Remember the Love that We once Shared
Miss Me but Let Me go!

For this is a Journey We all Must take
And each must Go Alone
It's All a Part of the Masters Plan
Just a step on the Road to Home!

When You are Lonely and Sick at Heart
Go to the Friends you know
And Bury Your Sorrow by doing Good Deeds
Just Miss Me but Let Me Go!
