Joseph Michael ‘Chirp’ Chervinak, 81, a lifelong resident of Eynon, passed away peacefully, Monday, May 22, at Mid Valley Health Care Center, Sturges, after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Born Monday, February 24, 1936, in Eynon, he was a son of Michael J. and Helen H. Bernosky Chervinak. Shortly after his 1954 graduation from Archbald High School, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he was assigned to the Seventh Infantry Division in Korea. After he was discharged, Chirp was employed at Casket Shells, Eynon; Abington Manor, Clarks Summit; and retired from Sandvik Steel, Waverly.

Joe was a lifetime member of Christ the King Parish, St Mary Czestochowa Church, Eynon, and a member of the Eynon American Legion Post #624, and the Eynon VFW Post #7963. Chirp was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of the Anthracite Rod and Gun Club. He loved his daily walks with his buddy, Bandit. Joe also took great pride in his vegetable garden each summer, and made sure he supplied his many friends and neighbors with the harvest.

He is survived by his sister Marian and husband Bob Castner, Scott Township; nephew Rob and wife Amy Castner, Clarks Summit; Michael and wife Tatiana Castner, Harrisburg; great niece Victoria; great nephews Tommy and Joshua, and many cousins. He was also preceded in death by his brother Edward ‘Ted’ Chervinak.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the entire staff of Mid Valley Health Care Center. They treated Joe with loving care and compassion. Thank you as well, to Traditional Hospice Staff for their outstanding compassion and care, especially in his final days.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, 10 a.m. at Christ the King Parish, St Mary Czestochowa Church, 417 Main Street, Eynon. Private inurnment at Our Mother of Sorrow Cemetery, Finch Hill, Greenfield Township. Family will receive friends from 9:30 until time of service in the church vestibule.
